Advocacy

The Mockingbird Society
With the goal of fostering change in the child welfare system, The Mockingbird Society advocates for youth in foster care or group homes. The Society also supports the Advocates for System Kids and Youth Coalition (ASK-Y) and the Mockingbird Times, a newspaper produced by children who are homeless or in foster/group home care.

Homelessness

Committee to End Homelessness in King County
Site includes analysis of factors that create and sustain homelessness, the Committee's ten-year plan to end homelessness in King County, and links to resources for those who are homeless or about to become homeless.

A Dream Denied
A 2006 report issued by The National Coalition for the Homeless and The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty, "A Dream Denied: The Criminalization of Homelessness in U.S. Cities" examines laws targeting the homeless as well as constructive alternatives to criminalizing homelessness. The report also identifies twenty U.S. cities with the harshest anti-homeless laws.

Real Change
A publication sold by Seattle's homeless, Real Change "strives to create fairness, opportunity and community by covering issues that socially conscious people want to know about, from topics surrounding poor and homelessness, to stories about labor, the environment, public health and civil liberties."

Seattle/King County Coalition for the Homeless
A coalition of organizations and individuals, SKCCH provides emergency resources and attempts to break the cycle of homelessness by addressing root causes. SKCCH is currently working to increase the availability of shelters, support services, and affordable housing.

Housing Resources

Low Income Housing Institute
The LIHI owns and operates housing for low-income and homeless people. The organization's web site features information on eligibility for LIHI housing, an online application, and descriptions of other resources, including the Resident Services Department and the Urban Rest Stop.

Tenants Union of Washington State
The Tenants Union educates people facing housing problems and helps them organize to combat unfair housing policies and preserve low-income housing.

Job Training

FareStart
In addition to serving meals, FareStart trains homeless and disadvantaged people to work in the food service industry. The extensive training is supplemented by case management and job placement.

Services

Crisis Clinic
Crisis Clinic provides online referrals to counseling, community services, shelter, food pantries, rent assistance and other basic needs. Information is also available via the Community Information Line--just dial 2-1-1 from a land line or (206) 461-3200 from a cell or rotary phone. The Clinic's Crisis Line ((206) 461-3210) offers immediate help for individuals, families and friends of people in emotional crisis.

City of Seattle Homeless Services
A directory of links for adults, families, and youth who need shelter, transitional housing, or emergency food, The site also contains reports on issues affecting the homeless.

Fremont Public Association
The FPA assists the homeless or those who want to remain in their homes; provides emergency food; operates special programs for infants, toddlers, and seniors; holds classes in financial education, food growing, and nutritious cooking for low-income people; and offers transportation and communication resources for low-income people.

ClearPoint Financial Solutions
ClearPoint Financial Solutions is a non-profit credit counseling agency that offers the consumer credit counseling services at no charge. They are a system wide member of the Better Business Bureau and the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. They offer services as an education to the consumers that may be in a negative debt situation at no cost. Their mission is to be proactive and reactive to a consumer obtaining financial wellness and guiding them through troubled time.

The United Way's volunteer page allows users to find volunteer opportunities by interest and/or location.
